How to Check Motorcycle Comparable Vehicles in a Valuation Report
A factual checklist for reviewing motorcycle comparables by model, trim, mileage, equipment, condition, location, source, and date.
Check every comparable against the loss motorcycle’s exact year, make, model, trim, factory package, mileage, condition, equipment, location, seller type, listing or transaction date, and availability. Save the complete source record and identify factual differences individually. Similar body style or model family does not automatically make two motorcycles comparable.
Step by step
Use this sequence to keep the record clear.
Define the loss motorcycle
Record VIN, year, exact trim, factory package, paint, mileage, pre-loss condition, options, and separately documented accessories.
Open the full comparable source
Review the complete listing or record rather than a cropped price, and save URL, date, seller, location, photos, and description.
Match configuration
Check engine and drivetrain, trim, factory paint, wheels, audio, luggage, electronics, and limited-edition equipment.
Compare mileage and condition
Identify objective differences and whether the report applies specific adjustments.
Check market timing and geography
A stale, unavailable, distant, or unusual listing may require explanation even if the model matches.
Trace every adjustment
Follow base value, additions, deductions, mileage, condition, options, taxes or fees, deductible, and salvage treatment.
What matters
Motorcycle-specific details change the repair file.
A comparable is more than a price
A seller’s asking price is not automatically a completed market transaction, but the full listing can still provide useful evidence when identity and condition genuinely match. Preserve the context needed to evaluate it.
Create a side-by-side table rather than collecting unrelated screenshots. One accurate configuration comparison is more useful than many approximate models.
Specialty trim and custom equipment
CVO and limited motorcycles may differ substantially from base touring versions. Verify factory paint, package, components, and edition using the VIN and manufacturer information.
Keep aftermarket equipment separate because coverage and valuation treatment depend on policy language. Do not add every invoice dollar directly to a base value without examining the policy and report method.
How Vision contributes facts
Vision can document the motorcycle identity, observed configuration, pre-loss records supplied by the owner, and collision-repair condition. It does not decide the settlement or act as a public adjuster.
Direct factual valuation questions to the insurer in writing and use the policy, current California DOI guidance, and qualified advisers for claim-specific decisions.
Avoid these errors
Small documentation mistakes create big gaps later.
- Comparing a base model with a limited trim
- Saving only a price screenshot
- Ignoring seller location and listing date
- Using collision damage as pre-loss condition
- Combining factory and aftermarket equipment

Questions riders ask
Frequently asked questions.
Must a comparable be the same model year?
Exact matches are generally easier to evaluate, but the report may use adjustments. Ask how each difference was handled.
Are dealer listings better than private listings?
Seller type is one comparison dimension. Configuration, condition, mileage, date, geography, and availability also matter.
Does Vision set actual cash value?
No. Vision supplies repair and motorcycle facts; the insurer determines its valuation position.
